How to think about time

These time blocks are where we start when we sketch your morning. Bride makeup is usually about one hour. Bride hair and makeup together are usually about two hours. Bridesmaids, mothers, and other family members are often about forty-five minutes per service. After the last chair, keep thirty to sixty minutes for dressing, flowers, and a final look before first photos.

Hair and makeup can happen at the same time on different people, but not at the same time on the same person. That's why two artists can often finish a smaller party before late-morning portraits, and why a very large list with a single artist gets tight. We'll help you find a balance that still leaves room to breathe.

Starting points by party size

If everyone wants both hair and makeup, these starting points usually work. We'll refine them once we know your photo times and any extras. For a party of four, two artists (one on hair, one on makeup) can usually do it without rushing, in about four hours including a dressing buffer. For a party of six, two artists can work if the morning is long, and a third artist usually makes the pace easier. For a party of eight, a slightly larger team, often three or four artists, keeps the room from feeling rushed. For a party of ten or more, we typically recommend enough chairs that no one is still getting ready when portraits begin.

If some guests want only hair or only makeup, the morning gets simpler. If most looks are formal updos with pieces to blend, we may suggest more time or another artist. Mothers and grooms count when they're in the chair, and we'll plan for them from the start.

A sample morning for a smaller party

For a bride and three attendants with an 11:00 a.m. first look, two artists can often start around 7:00 a.m. Attendants rotate through hair and makeup while the bride is scheduled in the middle of the morning, never at the very end. The last half hour is for dressing and a last check, so you step into photos ready. If your trial showed that hair should come before makeup, we simply reverse the bride's order. The goal is the same either way: you're looked after, and the photographer isn't waiting.

What can change the plan

We may suggest more time, or another artist, when many looks are formal, when hairpieces need blending, when tattoo cover is part of portraits, when flower girls need a later slot so their hair lasts, when the groom wants grooming, or when outdoor portraits in wind, heat, or salt air need a slower, more set-in finish. We may suggest a smaller team when several people want only one service, or when the photo window is long. Tell us too if the getting-ready room is small, so we can plan a team that fits the space, the outlets, and the rest of your vendors.
